The plant, its legends and its botany
The Tamil name of Khus-khus is Vetiver, which is not the name of a dish but means "chopped". Indeed, it is necessary to plow a ton of ground to get out a pound of roots. Vetiver is a Poaceae: a large grass made of tufts of slender leaves nearly two feet long but is actually in its roots that lies its strength. This is also out of them that the essential oil is extracted. There
is so much force that its roots are still used after distillation to
feed the fire for the next distillation and livestock.
Its roots are intertwined and tangled in the soil to a depth of 2 meters. They are so entangled that they can hold river banks and slopes during severe floods and monsoons. The
molecules of essential oil are also the same game in jar: they are
mostly sesquiterpenoids (very long for an essential oil). So long that they are intertwined in the flask like roots in the ground.
The essential oil is not very fluid and comes out with great difficulty from the bottle. That's why you have special caps with a large opening on our bottles of vetiver. This feature makes the oil smell last much longer. That is why perfumery uses it very often in fragrances to keep smells (as a fixative). Is is particularly present in numerous after-shave.

« Extra-sup »
The term "Extra-sup" or "Extra" can sometimes be seen on the bottles. This
is not a designation of quality but it qualifies the first part of the
distillation ... And it's interesting to know what that means. To take out this plant's very long molecules, it must distill for a long time. If the cuts are industrially harvested and pile up, it is more profitable to work too quickly. So they are not distilled long enough.
In the end, the oil is not balanced and can't give all the plant has got or wants. and wants to give. It's a shame. In addition, being a plant that balances hormones and body functions, it needs all its components. One cannot balance out a scale with one hand behind their back.
Plants like vetiver require long distillation in order to be worthy of aromatherapy.
