The plant. its legends and its botany
Ginger is a central and mythical foundation stone. The name of its botanical family is even : the Zingiberaceae. Deeply divided leaves rise from simple rods. One single leaf per stem and for a good reason: they are actually petioles. Indeed, the stem remains underground. It's called a rhizome and that is the part which is preserved, milled as a spice or distilled to produce the essential oil. This rhizome looks halfway between the potato, Jerusalem artichoke and the burning ashes.
So, very divided leaves -much like Venetian blinds- and flowers growing like small garden torches. The
flower spikes resemble funny spruce cones that have decided to grow backwards and wear unexpected colours due to their psychedelia.
There
is almost no need to present the myths and legends about Ginger as this
plant has been the backbone of traditional medicines as important as
Ayurveda (3,000 year-old papers) and Chinese Medicine
(quoted by Confucius already in the 7th century BC). In Europe, Dioscorides already described it glowingly in the first century.
It has become almost a local traditional taste. How many traditional dishes and desserts are made of ginger in Europe? Scandinavian speculoos, Hansel and Gretel's gingerbread ... Besides, the
excess of food calls for Ginger - it is not a bad thing to have it in your bag when you visit friends who eat substantial amounts of food.One drop before the meal off the back of the hand and probably a few drops afterwards.
Still, Ginger resonates in the ear of all as a traditional aphrodisiac. Senegalese women hang rhizomes to their husbands' belts if they does not show any stallion courage. Nostradamus
