The plant, its legends and its botany
Davana is an artemisia (from the same family as wormwood, mugwort, tarragon). These
are Asteraceae, which does not strike at first because you have to
look at the flowers very closely to notice it (each flower head is composed of
many small flowers). It is a highly evolved plant family in flora. All artemisiae rise in straight rods that seek to ascend to their heavenly roots quickly. At the same time, they are very generous with carved foliage (even tiny fine leaves) all along the stem.
We will avoid posting a whole description here, but it is impressive to read all the requirements for a good culture of Davana. Time, shade, if there has been dew and whether it was important or not, the times it rained, the drying and distillation time etc. etc. In shorter terms, a plant with which one really has to get along in order to produce a quality and beautiful essential oil.
It is not common to come cross Davana in the wild, but it is very common in gardens. Particularly
in the region of Mysore, home of sandalwood, with which it seems to
have a great affinity and grows very well next to. Besides, large amounts of both plants can be found on the altars in temples (most often dedicated to Shiva). Flower heads (the part that is distilled for essential oil) are put together into garlands which smell ... ... Oh, it would be mean to finish this sentence
that takes us away in olfactory paradise while we are reading this behind our computer.
This smell... soft and sweet, flowery and fruity, reminiscent of strawberry, apricot and candy... When one inhales davana, the effect is very simple: they want treats. Traces of davana can by the way be found in many pastries, cakes, sweets and soft drinks in India and Iraq in particular. When smelt directly from the bottle, it makes us want a nice massage and tenderness.
